Rumors from the Ass Past Rumors (09/21/2000): the big news of the day: the knicks finally got rid of patrick ewing. this deal was a biggie that involved 4 teams and tons of other players, cash, and draft picks. here's the skinny on the deal: the knicks get: glen rice (lakers), travis knight (lakers), luc longley (suns), lazaro borrell (who knows?), vernon maxwell (sonics), vladimir stepania (who cares?), two first-round picks and two second-round picks. the sonics get: patrick ewing. and that's it. the lakers get: horace grant (sonics), greg foster (sonics), emanual davis (pretty sure he was a sonic) and chuck person (suns). the suns get: chris dudley, a first round pick and cash. this is a good deal for all involved, to a degree. the knicks get rid of the aged ewing and get 2 players that can play the centre position. they also get rice, a streaky shooter. the knicks will have to change up their system so they can get sprewell, houston and rice in there @ the same time. if not, there's gonna be some bitchy players in NYC. the lakers, the real winners of the deal, get 2 power forwards who could play the whole game, if needed. also, they get a n outstanding outside shooter in chuckie person. the only real loser in the deal are the suns who rid themseleves of luc 'mike, can you give me another piggy-back ride to a title' longley but pick up chris dudley, the worst free-throw shooter in the NBA. however, they get some coin and a pick. the joe smith controversy is really heating up. seems as if it is a foregone conclusion that his contract with the t-wolves will be voided and he'll be a free-agent again. the teams making the biggest push are the bulls (why, i'm not sure, there front court is one of the most promising in the NBA already), the knicks (who really need front court help) and the magic. don't look past the clippers, though, as they have some cash to spend where as all the other teams have only their $2.25 million exception. also, in related news, othella harrington of the grizzlies is demanding a trade to a western conference team as he's unhappy being a canadian citizen. the latest rumour has harrington going to the t-wolves for joe smith. this would be nice for the griz as then they wouldn't have to play big country and they'd be able to let stromile swift mature @ his own pace. the charlotte hornets may become the new orleans hornets, and soon. the hornets have been losing approx. $1 million/month in their current building and are trying to get a new one built. if that deal goes through, they may be hitting the road in 2 years, when their current lease on the Hive runs out. new orleans has been looking for a team ever since they lost the jazz (for those of you who didn't know, the utah jazz used to be the new orleans jazz. didn't the name seem a little stupid for a city in the middle of morman country??) ed |
